Search engine optimization or SEO can be considered both as a science and voodoo. The benefits which can be drawn from using SEO links entirely depend upon the way you have implemented them. The term SEO does not refer to ‘fooling the search engines’ rather it is an effective way to increase the traffic to your website.

Many people think that SEO is some sort of black magic or a secret code which is used by the web masters in their periodic conversations. However they are not aware of the fact that SEO is a technique and its proper implementation requires continuous monitoring and interaction with the website. In reality SEO is just one of the various marketing strategies available to web masters but it is a fundamental strategy.

Search engine optimization is a technique in which a website is optimized so that it gets a high ranking in a search engine when a particular term is searched. Following are some basic SEO tactics:

First, analyze the strength of your competitors. One of the most important and useful techniques on which your efforts should be focused is Keyword Selection.

Secondly, reanalyze the linking strategy you are following. This is because adding too many links to other sites from your own site may prove beneficial for that site only. It can be a potential strike against your site if those sites are not related to you. Also having placed a link to another site on your web page will not bring any benefit to you if those sites are not linked back to your site. Always ensure that you check any reciprocal agreements on a regular basis.

Having many one way links on your website can be regarded as a good linking strategy. There are a variety of services available where you can purchase one way links.

Below are a few other strategies one can follow for the successful promotion of a website. Some of these are:

  1. Blogging – Running your own blog can generate unique content which in turn generates traffic to your web site.
  2. Forums – If you specialize on a specific subject then try searching for some forums relating to your subject and register. Answering questions and helping people for free can often turn those people into paying customers.
  3. Press Releases - If you have something newsworthy to say, then make sure you say it in a press release.
  4. Articles – Again, if you have a specialist subject, write about it and list it at the various article repositories and other web masters will publish your material with links back to your web site.

As far as SEO is concerned, there are no quick fixes. Always remember that SEO is a process of obtaining high rankings in search engines and it should be a permanent and long term solution for increasing your site’s traffic. However these days, SEO is gaining importance among not only regular websites but also larger corporate websites in order to gain more exposure, so beware, the competition is getting stiff.
