The first two parts of this article must have given you a good idea about what banner advertisements are and their importance in the world of online advertising. In this part of the article, we move on to discuss how banner ads are made and what you can do in order to make them more effective and derive the maximum from them.

Banner ads can be made using a static image in the form of GIF, JPEG or PNG; or if you want to be more creative and create a unique advertisement for your product or website - you can use either JavaScript or multimedia objects through employing technologies like Java or Flash. They show different images in quick succession thereby building the impression of an animated banner advertisement. These animations are mostly made in the form of GIF.

This method of making banner advertisement is very popular since it combines visuals and audio. Moreover, it provides you with several options (graphic and sound combinations) to make the banner more appealing. This is perhaps the only kind of advertisement wherein we can add sound to get the attention of the viewer, just like a salesman does.

You will need to apply a bit of thought in order to make your banner ads effective and derive the most out of them.

First of all, the content on the banner ad should be interesting yet simple so that it catches the attention of the visitor / viewer as soon as the web page loads up. Second important thing is to create your banner ad with the target audience in your mind. Your messages / ad-line should be thought-of accordingly (and the characters, as in animations, are chosen giving due consideration to the target audience). And it goes without saying that your ad should be aesthetically appealing to your target audience. Use proper color combinations that are pleasing to your target audience e.g. there are regional likes / dislikes for particular colors. Similarly, take care that the ad content is not offensive to anyone in any way.

So that is all about banner advertising, for now at least.
