If you thought that it was just the keywords and the quality of content that mattered to the search engines, you are wrong. Quantity of content is also important for search engine optimization. In fact, search engines just love content.
Web pages with more content (and optimum keyword density) are better indexed than web pages that have much less content or web pages that are just stuffed with keywords. In fact, web pages that have just 100-200 words are given the least preference by the search engines and in most cases are not indexed at all. Any web page that you want indexed should have a minimum of 300 words. And there is no upper limit to it, the more content you have on your web page, the better it is. Web pages with larger amounts of content get better ranked by the search engines (considering all the other factors are constant in such a comparison).
But again, remember that you might not actually be looking to get all your web pages indexed. Practically all websites will generally have a couple of pages which have little or no content e.g. the ‘contact us’ page. You don’t need to break the integrity of your website just to get such pages indexed. So, though the quantity of content does matter you should leave some web pages alone.
Also, do not try to stretch the content unnecessarily i.e. do not compromise on the quality of content just for the sake of quantity. And yes, repetitive content is a big-big no. Search engines are far too smart (and they are getting smarter every day) to find out such repetitive content; and if the search engines find repetitive content, your web page ranking is sure to suffer.
In this context it is also important to mention that you must lay out your website well in terms of content too. You are better off having 500 words per page rather than having a single page that is 2000 words long and 4 other web pages that are just 100 words each.
So, that’s a start on the “Quantity of content”. We will carry on with this theme in the second part of this article.
