The first two parts of this article must have given you a good idea about what banner advertisements are and their importance in the world of online advertising. In this part of the article, we move on to discuss how banner ads are made and what you can do in order to make them more effective and derive the maximum from them.

Banner ads can be made using a static image in the form of GIF, JPEG or PNG; or if you want to be more creative and create a unique advertisement for your product or website - you can use either JavaScript or multimedia objects through employing technologies like Java or Flash. They show different images in quick succession thereby building the impression of an animated banner advertisement. These animations are mostly made in the form of GIF. Read more… »

We have already seen (in part one) that banner advertisements are one of the oldest methods adopted for online advertising. Though most people would already know what a banner looks like, we have also included a bit of basic stuff on banners in the first part of this article. Here we will delve a bit deeper into banner ads.

You might have heard people talk about the number of ‘impressions’ they are getting for their website and how they plan to further bolster that number in order to earn more money from their website.

Yes, ‘impressions’ is indeed one of the most important terms in the Internet marketing arena. In one of my other articles, I have explained the term ‘impressions’ in great detail but here I will just stop with saying that ‘impressions’ is the number of times a page or an ad is loaded (known as page and ad impressions respectively). ‘Impressions’ is a term that you would have quite commonly heard in the world of internet marketing. Let’s check what ‘impressions’ means and how people get confused with this term.

Impressions are classified as either page impressions or ad impressions. Here, by page impressions we imply web page impressions. In order to understand this better lets take an example. Consider a website that has 4 web pages. Whenever a particular web page is accessed (loaded) by a person who visits the website – 1 page impression is recorded. Since different webpages could have a different number of users visiting them, the page impressions for each of the webpages of the website could be different. Also, different webpages could be laid out differently and hence contain different numbers of ads. Read more… »
